Welcome to Kingsbury Class (Year 3-4)

Teachers: Mrs Bartlett/Mrs Sweatman
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Elkins

Welcome to the new year. We are very excited to share our new topics for this term. Scroll down to find topic information for the spring term. Below, you will also find out all about our class and our routines.

Kingsbury Class has children from Years 3 and 4.  Mrs Sweatman is the class teacher from Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Bartlett on Thursdays and Fridays. Other teachers support our class for some subjects including for art and French.

We have an open door policy so please do pop in and see us before school, or catch us at the end of the day if you have any questions which we may be able to answer quickly. Alternatively, email the office and your message will be passed on. We can arrange an appointment at a convenient time if necessary.

The following information will help you prepare your child for the routines in our class.

Reading: Children should always have a suitable book to read at school and at home. This book should be aligned to your child's age and reading ability. We will monitor these books at school and help your child to choose suitable books. We encourage children to read a wide variety of genres, and also use the library to choose different books which interest them. Reading at home should be recorded in your child's Reading Record. It is their responsibility to bring these to school and home again every day as these are also used for computer login details,  and any quick messages from teachers.  We reward children's reading with team points, stickers, stamps and sometimes prizes! We are now using Acelerated Reader at school. When children finish reading a book, they can take an online quiz at school to see how well they have understood their reading. Children are allocated points according to the level of book and scores from their quizzes. We can use the information at school to suggest different genres of books, more complex, or simpler books according to how they perform.

Curriculum: In Kingsbury, all children will study the same curriculum topics although the skills taught will match the Year 3 or Year 4 curriculum so that pupils will continue to develop and be prepared for their next year. We constantly assess the needs of all pupils to ensure that the work that each child carries out enables them to make good progress. At times, Year 3 and 4 pupils may take part in different activities. Mr Sweatman will teach all Year 4 children for maths daily. In Science, Mr Rodd will teach Year 4 children each week. Mrs Bartlett will teach science to Year 3.

Home Learning: Tasks will be set on Fridays to be returned each Monday. Written tasks should be completed carefully in pencil and be checked through by children prior to handing it in. Instructions will be provided for homework tasks plus any special resources required to complete this. Spelling words which we are working on will also be shared and can be practised on Spelling Shed. New words are set each Friday with informal assessment the following Friday. Mrs Sweatman runs a homework club on Wednesday lunchtimes for pupils to complete work that they have not handed in.

PE lessons: PE will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays. PE kits should remain in school all week in case changes to the timetable occur, however, we aim to teach PE on the same days each week if possible. Children will change for PE lessons.  In addition, please ensure children continue to keep a pair of wellies or rough shoes in school to accommodate outdoor learning, play times or activities on the school field.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Mrs Sweatman and Mrs Bartlett

Last term, we enjoyed a day at Carymoor as part of our topic on the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings. We learnt about Ancient runes and made our own pendants. We ground cereals using stones and made our own bread using the flour. We cooked the bread using a spear on an open fire in a roundhouse. Some of us added honey to flavour our twisted bread rolls. We also learnt how to identify animals by their footprints.

As Carymoor is based at the recycling centre near Castle Cary, we also looked at our lunchboxes to find out how much of our waste could be recycled. We were really pleased to discover that our class had only a very small amount of waste which could not be recycled. We told our leader, Gary that we would would have even less waste if we visited again in the future!

Thank you to the team at Carymoor for a great day.
