Welcome to Kingsbury Class! The children have settled in quickly and we have had a fantastic first week.

This year Mrs Hawley, Mrs Bown and Mrs Falbo will all be supporting the children in class. We are also lucky to have Mrs Bungay volunteering on a regular basis. We would always welcome further parent help listening to readers or to share with us a talent or expertise! Please see me if you would like to come into school either on a regular or occasional basis.

This term we will be learning about the Romans as our history topic. We will be studying the authors Oliver Jeffers and Enid Blyton in English. In Science, we are thinking about what makes a good scientist and this will involve some exciting (and sometimes messy!) experiments. We will also be designing, creating and painting. Please provide your child with an old shirt or apron to keep in school for these activities. Mrs Bartlett will be teaching the whole class how to play the recorder in weekly music lessons. This is in addition to brass tuition provided to all Year 4 children. PE will take place on a Monday (with visiting PE coaches) and Friday. However, it is expected that all children will have their PE kit in every day as our timetable can change at short notice. Additionally, we will be running regularly so children will need their trainers daily.

We will be setting weekly homework this year. This will usually be set on a Friday and due in on a Wednesday. It will consist of three parts:

  1. An activity to help the children practice their times tables. At the moment this is likely to be a paper activity but I may set online tasks later in the year. If you wish your child to do additional practice they will be registered on the website; and I recommend
  2. Spelling Spellings will be tested on a Monday. The spellings sent home will have been practiced in class already as part of a regular spelling session. It is important that children know the meanings of their spellings as well as how to read and write them. They will be a combination of words containing learned spelling rules along with words from the Year 3/4 statutory spelling list (a copy is stuck in the back of your child’s homework book for your reference).
  3. Reading. As always, we encourage children to read daily and we would appreciate your signature in their diary so that we know they are being listened to regularly. It is important that children continue to read and be listened to when they reach the ‘free reader’ stage. In addition, we request that your child complete a reading response activity for each book they read (at least one per week but they may choose to do more) Please encourage your child to choose a different activity each time, ticking a box underneath the activity when they have done it.

We expect the children to become independent at changing their reading book but will remind them to do so (and check up from time-to-time). Please do pop in if your child is not bringing home a reading book daily. We use various assessments to establish a reading level but feel free to chat with us if you feel your child is having difficulty or is ready for a new challenge.

The children are now set up on Purple Mash and Mathletics, which they will be familiar with from previous years. Although I will not be setting tasks this term, it really helps for children to explore these websites at home. The more independent the children can be at logging on and finding their way around the activities, the easier it is for us to use the computers in class.

I hope this letter has provided you with some key information about Kingsbury class and our routines but if you have any further questions or queries you are very welcome to pop in at the beginning or end of the school day, or for a more detailed chat make an appointment through the school office. I look forward to working with your children this year and thank you for your continued support.

Best wishes,

Mrs Taylor.
